Is Your HVAC System Ready for Fall? Here’s What to Check Before the Cold Hits
Summer’s heat is winding down, and before you know it you’ll be reaching for the thermostat to turn the heat on for the first time. That first cold snap has a way of arriving without warning — and the last thing you want is to discover your heating system isn’t cooperating when temperatures drop.
At Hellas Air Temp, we’ve been preparing homes and businesses for every season since 1978. Here’s exactly what you should be doing right now to make sure your HVAC system is ready for fall and winter.
Schedule a Heating System Tune-Up Before You Need It
The best time to service your furnace or heat pump is before the heating season starts — not after you’ve already turned it on and something sounds wrong. A professional tune-up catches worn components, dirty burners, low refrigerant in heat pumps, and calibration issues while you still have time to address them without urgency.
Waiting until October or November means longer wait times and the real possibility of going a night or two without heat while parts are ordered. September is the sweet spot.
Replace Your Air Filter
This is the simplest and most overlooked maintenance item in any HVAC system. A clogged filter restricts airflow, forcing your system to work harder, driving up your energy bills, and shortening the life of your equipment. If you haven’t changed your filter since spring, change it now — and set a reminder to check it every 30 to 90 days through the heating season.
Test Your Thermostat
Switch your thermostat from cooling to heating mode and let the system run for a few minutes. Listen for unusual sounds, check that air is coming from all your vents, and confirm that the temperature reading matches what you expect. If you’re still running a traditional thermostat, now is a good time to consider upgrading to a programmable or smart thermostat — the energy savings over a heating season add up quickly.
Clear the Area Around Your Outdoor Unit
Over the summer, debris, vegetation, and yard equipment can accumulate around your outdoor condenser or heat pump unit. Clear at least two feet of clearance on all sides. If you have a heat pump, make sure nothing is obstructing the unit — it needs to pull ambient air to heat your home efficiently, even in cold weather.
Check Your Vents and Registers
Walk through your home or commercial space and make sure every supply and return vent is open and unobstructed. Furniture, rugs, and storage boxes commonly end up blocking registers without anyone noticing. Blocked vents create pressure imbalances that reduce efficiency and can cause long-term damage to your system.
Inspect Your Air Quality Systems
Fall brings dry air, closed windows, and more time spent indoors — which means indoor air quality becomes more important, not less. If you have a whole-home humidifier, UV air purifier, or ventilation system, have it serviced alongside your heating equipment. Proper humidity levels (between 30 and 50 percent) keep your family comfortable, protect wood floors and furniture, and reduce static electricity.
Know When to Call a Professional
If your system is more than 15 years old, if your energy bills have been climbing without explanation, or if you noticed any performance issues over the summer cooling season, this fall is the time to have a professional assessment. Proactive replacement on your timeline is always less disruptive — and less expensive — than an emergency breakdown in January.
