Your System Is Working Harder Than It Should Have To
The most common cause of high heating bills isn't the cost of gas or electricity — it's an HVAC system operating at reduced efficiency. As equipment ages or goes without maintenance, it has to run longer and work harder to meet the same thermostat setpoint. That extra runtime shows up directly on your bill.
A furnace with a dirty heat exchanger, a heat pump with low refrigerant, or a system with worn ignitors or sensors can easily burn 15 to 30 percent more energy than a properly maintained system running the same schedule. Your Filter Is Probably Overdue
A clogged air filter is the single easiest and most overlooked source of HVAC energy waste. When the filter is blocked, the blower motor strains to move air through the system. More strain means more electricity. It also means less airflow, which means longer run times to reach your set temperature.
Check your filter now. If it's been more than 60 to 90 days since you changed it, replace it. This costs a few dollars and takes five minutes. It can meaningfully affect your monthly bill.
Your Thermostat Schedule Isn't Optimized
Heating a home to 72 degrees while you're at work or asleep is one of the most common and expensive habits in residential energy use. A programmable or smart thermostat that drops the temperature by 7 to 10 degrees during an 8-hour window can cut heating costs by up to 10 percent annually, according to the Department of Energy.

Heat Is Escaping Through Ducts, Windows, and Walls

If your system seems to run constantly without reaching your target temperature, duct leakage is a likely culprit.
Drafty windows and poor insulation are secondary factors, but they compound quickly. Weatherstripping and insulation aren't glamorous, but they reduce your heating load directly, which means your system runs less and costs less to operate.
Your Equipment Is Undersized or Oversized for Your Space
A heating system that was never correctly sized for your home will always be inefficient. An undersized unit runs constantly trying to keep up. An oversized unit short-cycles — turning on and off frequently — which wears equipment faster and doesn't allow proper humidity removal.
