Why Is My AC Leaking Water? Common Summer Causes
Finding water around your indoor air-conditioning equipment can be alarming, especially during the hottest and most humid part of summer.
Your air conditioner naturally removes moisture from the air while cooling your home. Under normal conditions, that moisture collects in a drain pan and leaves the system through a condensate drain line or condensate pump.
Water on the floor, ceiling, wall, or outside the drain pan usually means that part of this drainage process is not working correctly.
The problem may be relatively simple, such as a blocked drain line, but it can also indicate a frozen coil, damaged drain pan, failed pump, or another system issue that requires professional service.
Where Does the Water Come From?
Warm indoor air contains moisture. When that air passes over the cold evaporator coil inside your HVAC system, some of the moisture condenses into water.
It is similar to the condensation that develops on the outside of a cold glass during summer.
Inside the air conditioner, that water should:
Drip from the evaporator coil
Collect in the condensate drain pan
Flow through a drain line
Drain safely outside or into an approved plumbing connection
Some systems use a condensate pump when gravity alone cannot move the water to the proper drainage location.
If the water cannot complete that path, it may back up and leak around the equipment.
Common Reasons an Air Conditioner Leaks Water

The condensate drain line carries moisture away from the indoor unit.
Over time, dust, dirt, organic material, and other debris may collect inside the line. Because the line regularly handles moisture, buildup can eventually restrict or completely block drainage.
When the water has nowhere to go, it may fill the drain pan and overflow.

Water around the indoor unit
A full or overflowing drain pan
Musty odors near the equipment
Water stains on nearby walls or ceilings
An air conditioner that unexpectedly shuts down
Some systems have a safety switch designed to stop cooling when the water level becomes too high. If your AC stops operating and you also notice water near the equipment, a drainage problem may be involved.
The Condensate Pump Is Not Working
Not every HVAC system can drain condensation through gravity.
Systems located in basements, interior mechanical rooms, or other areas without a convenient downward drainage route may rely on a condensate pump.
The pump collects water and moves it to an appropriate drain. If the pump loses power, becomes blocked, develops a float-switch problem, or fails mechanically, the reservoir may overflow.
A condensate pump problem should not be ignored. Even a relatively small amount of water can damage flooring, drywall, ceilings, stored items, or nearby equipment.
The Drain Pan Is Cracked or Corroded
The drain pan sits beneath the evaporator coil and catches condensation.
Older metal pans may corrode. Plastic pans may crack or become damaged. Debris inside the pan can also interfere with drainage.
A damaged pan may leak even when the drain line itself is clear.
Because the pan is often located inside or underneath the air handler, identifying the exact source of the leak may require opening and inspecting the equipment.
The Evaporator Coil Is Frozen
A frozen air-conditioning coil may eventually create a significant amount of water when the ice melts.
Coils can freeze when the system does not receive enough airflow or when another refrigeration problem affects normal operation.
Possible causes include:
A dirty air filter
Blocked return or supply vents
A dirty evaporator coil
Blower problems
Low refrigerant caused by a leak
Other airflow or mechanical issues
Visible ice is not a sign that the system is cooling especially well. It means the air conditioner is not operating normally.
The Air Filter Is Restricting Airflow
A heavily loaded filter can reduce the amount of air moving across the evaporator coil.
Restricted airflow may contribute to freezing, reduced comfort, weak airflow, and longer operating cycles.
Check the filter when you notice water, ice, weak airflow, or reduced cooling. Replace it when it is visibly dirty, using a filter type that is appropriate for the system.

Check whether the air filter is heavily dirty
Look for visible ice without opening equipment panels
Note where the water appears to be coming from

Do not continue operating a system that is actively leaking water. Continuing to run it may create additional condensation and increase the possibility of water or equipment damage.
Should You Clear the Drain Line Yourself?

A small amount of water leaving the condensate drain outside can be completely normal during humid weather. It indicates that the air conditioner is removing moisture from the indoor air.
Water pooling around the indoor equipment is different.
It may indicate that the condensate is not reaching its intended drainage location.
