Why Your AC Can’t Keep Up During a Connecticut Heat Wave

When temperatures and humidity climb during a Connecticut summer, your air conditioner may run longer than usual. In some cases, extended operation is a normal response to unusually demanding conditions. In others, constant operation is the first sign that the system is losing cooling capacity.

The important question is not simply, “How long has the AC been running?” It is whether the system is still maintaining a reasonably comfortable indoor temperature and delivering cool air throughout the home.

Here is how to tell the difference between a system working through a difficult heat wave and an air-conditioning problem that may require professional attention.

Is It Normal for an Air Conditioner to Run Constantly During Extreme Heat?

An air conditioner does not produce unlimited cooling. Every system is designed around the expected cooling needs of a particular home.

During periods of extreme heat, the amount of heat entering through the roof, attic, windows, exterior walls, doors, and air leaks can increase significantly. Your cooling system may need to operate for longer cycles to remove that heat.

Longer operation is not automatically a problem if:

  • Cool air is coming from the supply vents

  • The indoor temperature is remaining relatively stable

  • Humidity remains comfortable

  • The system is not making unusual sounds

  • There is no ice or water around the equipment

A home taking longer to reach its thermostat setting during the hottest part of the afternoon is different from a home that becomes progressively hotter while the air conditioner runs.

Common Reasons an AC Struggles During Hot Weather

1. A Dirty Air Filter Is Restricting Airflow

The air filter is one of the simplest places to begin.

As dust, pet hair, and airborne particles collect in the filter, airflow can become restricted. Reduced airflow makes it more difficult for the system to circulate conditioned air and remove heat from the home.

Check the filter and replace it when it appears heavily coated or dirty. Filter replacement frequency varies by the filter type, system, home, pets, and indoor conditions.

2. Supply Vents or Return Vents Are Blocked

Furniture, rugs, curtains, boxes, and other household items can unintentionally obstruct airflow.

Walk through the home and make sure that supply registers are open and unobstructed. Return-air grilles should also have sufficient space around them.

Closing multiple vents in unused rooms is not necessarily an effective energy-saving strategy. It can change airflow and pressure within a duct system that was designed to operate with those vents open.

3. The Outdoor Unit Cannot Release Heat Effectively

Your air conditioner removes heat from the home and releases it outdoors. The outdoor equipment needs adequate airflow to perform that job.

Leaves, grass clippings, weeds, branches, and other debris can collect around the unit. Keep the surrounding area reasonably clear and avoid placing objects directly against the equipment.

Do not open equipment panels or attempt to clean internal electrical or mechanical components yourself.

4. The Thermostat Is Creating an Unrealistic Cooling Demand

Lowering the thermostat from 75 degrees to 65 degrees will not make a conventional air conditioner cool the home faster. It simply tells the system to continue operating until the lower temperature is reached.

During extreme heat, repeatedly lowering the setting may cause the system to operate continuously without solving the underlying comfort issue.

Set the thermostat to a comfortable, realistic temperature and allow the system time to operate.

Also confirm that:

  • The thermostat is set to Cooling

  • The temperature is set below the current room temperature

  • The system fan is set appropriately

  • The thermostat display is functioning normally

5. Heat Is Entering the Home Faster Than Usual

The HVAC system is only one part of summer comfort.

Direct sunlight through uncovered windows can add heat to the home throughout the day. Air leaks around windows and doors may allow hot, humid outdoor air inside. Poor attic insulation can also increase the cooling demand on upper floors.

During peak afternoon heat:

  • Close blinds or shades on sunny windows

  • Limit unnecessary use of ovens and other heat-producing appliances

  • Keep exterior doors closed

  • Use ceiling fans in occupied rooms to improve perceived comfort

Fans help people feel cooler by moving air, but they do not lower the room temperature. Turn them off in unoccupied rooms.

6. The System May Have a Mechanical or Refrigeration Problem

Some cooling problems cannot be diagnosed through basic homeowner checks.

Possible issues may include:

  • Low refrigerant caused by a leak

  • A frozen evaporator coil

  • A dirty indoor or outdoor coil

  • Blower problems

  • Electrical or control failures

  • Damaged or leaking ductwork

  • A failing compressor or other component

Refrigerant does not normally need to be “used up” or replaced as routine maintenance. A low refrigerant level may indicate a leak that should be located and evaluated.

Warning Signs That the Problem Is More Than the Weather

Contact an HVAC professional when:

  • The system is blowing warm or room-temperature air

  • Airflow is unusually weak

  • The indoor temperature continues rising

  • Ice appears on refrigerant lines or indoor equipment

  • Water is collecting around the air handler

  • The system repeatedly turns on and off

  • A breaker repeatedly trips

  • You notice burning odors, unusual noises, or electrical smells

  • Some rooms are significantly warmer than others

  • The system has stopped operating

Repeatedly resetting a tripped breaker is not recommended. If it trips again, the system should be inspected.

Should You Turn the AC Off If You See Ice?

Ice on an air conditioner is not a sign that the system is producing extra cooling. It may indicate an airflow or refrigeration problem.

Continuing to operate a frozen system can make the issue worse. Turn off cooling and contact a qualified HVAC professional for guidance. Do not chip or scrape ice from the equipment.
