Why Does My House Feel Humid With the AC Running?

Your thermostat may show a comfortable temperature while the home still feels sticky, heavy, or damp.

That is because temperature is only one part of indoor comfort. Humidity can change how warm a room feels and affect condensation, odors, indoor air quality, and moisture conditions throughout the home.

An air conditioner is designed to remove heat and moisture during normal operation. However, several equipment and building conditions can reduce its ability to control humidity effectively.

How Does Air Conditioning Remove Humidity?

As warm indoor air moves across the cold evaporator coil, moisture in the air condenses on the coil. That moisture collects in a drain pan and travels through the condensate drainage system.

This process happens while the system is cooling the home.

For effective moisture removal, the equipment needs proper airflow, adequate operating time, appropriate sizing, and a functioning drainage system.

A home can reach the thermostat setting without achieving comfortable humidity levels if the equipment cools the space too quickly, operates in very short cycles, or is affected by another performance problem.

What Indoor Humidity Level Should You Aim For?

There is no single setting that is ideal for every home and every season.

As a general target, many homeowners find indoor relative humidity around 40 to 50 percent comfortable during summer. Conditions above approximately 60 percent may increase the risk of condensation and moisture-related problems.

A small digital humidity monitor, sometimes called a hygrometer, can provide more useful information than relying on how the air feels.

Measure humidity in several areas rather than only next to the thermostat. Basements, upper floors, bathrooms, additions, and rooms with limited airflow may have different conditions.

Signs That Indoor Humidity May Be Too High

Possible signs include:

  • A sticky or clammy feeling indoors

  • Condensation on windows, pipes, vents, or other surfaces

  • Musty odors

  • Damp-feeling fabrics or bedding

  • Moisture collecting in a basement

  • Doors or wood materials that swell or become difficult to close

These signs do not identify one specific HVAC problem. They indicate that the source of the moisture should be investigated.

Why Your Home May Remain Humid

1. Outdoor Humidity Is Entering the Home

Connecticut summers can bring extended periods of humid weather. Moisture can enter through frequently opened doors, open windows, air leaks, poorly sealed penetrations, basements, crawl spaces, and other parts of the building envelope.

The air conditioner then has to manage both the heat and the additional moisture entering the home.

Keep windows closed when outdoor air is hot and humid. Check for obvious air leaks around doors and windows, especially if certain rooms consistently feel different from the rest of the home.

2. The Air Conditioner Is Short Cycling

Short cycling occurs when the system starts and stops more frequently than expected.

Because moisture removal takes place during cooling operation, short cycles may reduce the amount of time available for dehumidification.

Possible causes can include thermostat problems, airflow restrictions, equipment issues, or an air conditioner that is oversized for the home.

A larger air conditioner is not automatically better. Equipment should be selected based on the home’s cooling requirements rather than square footage alone.

3. The Air Filter Is Dirty

A heavily loaded filter may restrict airflow through the system.

Improper airflow can affect cooling performance, operating cycles, comfort, and equipment condition. Check the filter regularly and use a replacement that is appropriate for the system.

A filter with a higher efficiency rating is not always the correct choice if the system is not designed for the additional airflow resistance.

4. The System Needs Maintenance or Repair

Dirty coils, refrigerant problems, blower issues, drainage problems, control settings, or other equipment conditions may affect cooling and moisture removal.

An HVAC evaluation can help determine whether the issue is related to maintenance, system operation, equipment sizing, ductwork, or the building itself.

5. Moisture Is Coming From Inside the Home

Everyday activities add moisture to indoor air.

Common sources include:

  • Showers

  • Cooking

  • Dishwashing

  • Indoor clothes drying

  • Unvented appliances

  • Plumbing leaks

  • Damp basements or crawl spaces

Use bathroom exhaust fans while showering and allow them to operate afterward. Kitchen exhaust equipment should vent outdoors when possible.

A recirculating range hood may help capture some particles and odors but does not remove moisture from the home in the same way as an exhaust system that vents outside.

6. Ductwork or Insulation May Be Contributing

Duct leaks can allow humid air from unconditioned areas to enter the system. Poorly insulated cold ductwork can also develop surface condensation under certain conditions.

Moisture around vents or ducts should be evaluated rather than repeatedly wiped away without identifying the cause.

Will Lowering the Thermostat Remove More Humidity?

Not necessarily.

Lowering the temperature may make the air feel cooler, but it does not guarantee that the underlying humidity problem will be corrected.

In some homes, the result is simply a colder room that still feels damp.

Humidity control depends on equipment performance, system operation, airflow, moisture sources, ventilation, and building conditions.

When Does a Whole-Home Dehumidifier Make Sense?

A portable dehumidifier may be useful for one room or a limited area. A whole-home dehumidifier can provide broader humidity control when excess moisture affects multiple rooms or continues even when the cooling system is operating normally.

A whole-home system may be worth evaluating when:

  • Humidity remains elevated across much of the home

  • The basement contributes moisture to living spaces

  • The air conditioner reaches temperature before reducing humidity

  • The home experiences recurring condensation or dampness

  • Portable equipment is inadequate or inconvenient

The correct solution depends on where the moisture is coming from. Installing dehumidification equipment without addressing a leak, drainage problem, or building moisture source may leave the underlying problem unresolved.

Improve Comfort Without Making the House Colder

If your home feels humid while the AC is running, begin by measuring the humidity level, checking the filter, limiting outdoor moisture, using exhaust ventilation, and watching for condensation or drainage problems.

Persistent humidity may require a more complete evaluation of the HVAC equipment, airflow, ductwork, ventilation, basement conditions, and building envelope.
